£2,000 Grant Supports Isle of Wight Adventure Training for St John’s School CCF
St John’s School CCF cadets have enjoyed a memorable half day of water-based adventure training on the Isle of Wight, supported by a £2,000 grant from The Connaught Trust.
The grant helped make the activity more accessible to cadets attending the CCF’s summer camp, including young people from both St John’s School and its partner school, Southborough High School.
In its original application, St John’s School CCF explained that the cost of activities such as these can make them difficult for some young people to access. The grant was intended to help more cadets take part, learn new skills and develop confidence and leadership through adventure training.
During their time at Sandown Beach, the cadets took part in a range of paddlesport-based activities and made the most of the opportunity to get out on the water.
For some of those taking part, the experience was particularly significant, as they had not previously had the opportunity to visit the beach. The unit said the activity had a real impact on the cadets’ overall experience and helped them make the most of their time on the Isle of Wight.
The original application was made with the aim of widening access to adventure training and giving more young people the chance to take part in activities that might otherwise have been out of reach because of cost. The £2,000 award from The Connaught Trust helped the unit make that possible.
Adventure training is an important part of the Cadet experience, helping young people to develop confidence, teamwork, resilience and leadership while trying something new.
