“The way we came together as a team during tough moments changed how I view challenges."
In September, Southampton University Officer Training Corps (SUOTC) departed on a hiking expedition “The Berlin High Trail.” Sadly, due to challenging weather conditions, we had to replan, after 20cm of snow fell over evening one, at the first hut. EX SBJ 2 was thus adapted for low-level hikes near Mayrhofen from the 9th to the 17th of September.
“The tough conditions built my mental and physical resilience. It was truly transformative."
This trip to the Austrian Alps was designed for participants to gain practical experience towards their Summer Mountaineering Foundation (SMF) qualification, with a focus on mountaineering skills, navigation, and group management in alpine conditions. The itinerary was structured to provide a balance between challenging high-altitude hikes and lower-level routes due to adverse weather conditions. Despite some unforeseen circumstances, including heavy snowfall and sub-zero temperatures, the group adapted by modifying routes and taking safety precautions, ensuring the experience remained valuable and educational.
"I never expected to enjoy hiking, but this trip opened my eyes to new challenges."
Day 1 - (Mon, 9 Sep)
When we arrived in Munich, we were eager to explore its rich history and culture. Strolling through the streets, we admired the mix of modern and traditional architecture, and visited various landmarks. We tasted authentic German food and soaked in the lively atmosphere. It was a day that deepened our appreciation for German culture and history.
Day 2 – (Tues, 10 Sep)
The group spent the morning analysing the route we were planning to take, looking at weather, escape routes from the main trail, elevations, and other factors. After this, the group explored other parts of Munich before we embarked on our journey to Austria.
Day 3 – Mayrhofen to Gamshutte (Wed, 11 Sep):
The group successfully arrived at Mayrhofen HBF before taking a bus to Ginzling and ascending via Route 533 to the Gamshutte. Progress was steady in fine weather, and the group reached the hut without incident. However, due to an incoming storm and warnings of heavy snowfall, XO and Capt Adams opted for a cautious descent into the valley the next day. Plans were made to use Route 533a to Breitlahner and then a bus to Schlegeis to continue the journey via a safer route to Friesenberghaus.
Day 4 – Gamshutte to Breitlahner (Thu, 12 Sep):
The descent from Gamshutte along Route 533a was hindered by wet conditions, with a significant portion of the group soaked through. Given worsening weather and plummeting temperatures, the decision was made to delay the ascent to
Friesenberghaus via Route 532. Instead, accommodation was secured at Breitlahner Haus for the night, with plans to continue low-level hikes the following day due to adverse weather forecasts.
Day 5 – Breitlahner to Maxhütte (Fri, 13 Sep):
The group conducted a low-level hike along Route 522 to Maxhütte, stopping at the snow line without venturing into higher altitudes. Evening assessments confirmed that the planned route to Berliner Hutte was no longer feasible due to dangerous conditions. As a result, the focus shifted to further low-level hikes to ensure safety while still meeting training goals for the SMF.
Day 6 – Breitlahner to Wiesenhof (Sat, 14 Sep):
The group caught a bus to Mayrhofen and completed a low-level hike on Route 40 to Wiesenhof, returning via Routes 40a/41. A social lunch at the Stoaner restaurant was enjoyed by all, adding variety to this trip in a safe environment.
Day 7 – Breitlahner to Grawandhuette (Sun, 15 Sep):
With clear weather, a phased hike was undertaken. The group split, with one part walking to Schlegeis, while a smaller team of 8, led by 2 Mountain Leader Trainers (MLTs), continued towards Grawandhuette at the base of the valley leading to Berliner Hutte. This phase was achieved without any risk of avalanche or challenging terrain.
The group reconvened at Breitlahner after completing a qualifying mountain day (QMD).
Day 8 – Alpenrose Hike (Mon, 16 Sep):
The entire group travelled by bus to Mayrhofen, then ascended via Route 42 to
Jausenstation Alpenrose, returning on Route 43. The day concluded with a bus ride back to Breitlahner, marking the end of the hiking component of the trip.
Day 9 – Departure (Tue, 17 Sep):
The group travelled by bus from Breitlahner to Mayrhofen HBF, then by train to Munich
HBF before transferring to Munich Airport (MUN) and flying back to London Heathrow (LHR).
"Finishing those hikes felt incredible. It taught me so much about leadership and teamwork."
Overall, during our hiking expedition in Austria, we faced both physical and mental challenges, made tougher by adverse weather conditions. The difficult terrain and unpredictable elements tested our endurance, teamwork, and resilience. We learned the importance of preparation, adaptability, and supporting one another when the conditions grew harsh. Despite the hardships, we developed stronger leadership skills and a deeper appreciation for perseverance under pressure. The experience also opened our eyes to new activities we may have previously overlooked, showing us the value of stepping outside our comfort zones.
It was a tough but invaluable learning experience that broadened our horizons.
"This expedition pushed my limits, but it showed me what I can achieve with a strong team."
