Maidenhead Sea Cadets has been located on the same site, alongside the River Thames in Taplow, since 1960. Since that time the buildings have evolved to their current layout. In recent months considerable sums have been spent on internal decoration and improvements to make the facility more comfortable for
the cadets and volunteers.
It had been apparent for a while that during rain storms water drips appeared in various areas of the main building; this was particularly troublesome in office spaces. It was therefore decided to engage a contractor to thoroughly inspect the roof, which is comprised of corrugated steel sheets 50 years old, and seal any holes.
The entire roof area was inspected, cleaned any rusty area abraded and all holes sealed with torch-on mastic. Three coats of paint have been applied which should extend the roof’s life considerably. We did consider replacing the roof but not only would that be much more expensive, the interior has had foam insulation sprayed on which is very difficult to remove.
The volunteers will appreciate not have water drips on their heads, desks, etc. however it is too early to assess the full impact of the work until we have some continuous rain; the small amount of rain in recent days shows no sign of any drips. From the outside the overall impression is much improved, the building is
starting to look very much smarter.
