Nineteen RAF Air Cadets from four Sussex squadrons successfully completed their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh's Award expedition in May 2026, making good use of new camping and communications equipment purchased with a £2,404 grant from The Connaught Trust.

The grant was awarded to 1440 (Shoreham-by-Sea) Squadron RAF Air Cadets towards the purchase of new tents, cooking stoves and handheld radios.

The expedition brought together 19 cadets in four teams from 1440 (Shoreham-by-Sea), 1140 (Steyning), 176 (Hove) and 225 (Brighton No.1) Squadrons.

The new equipment was put to excellent use throughout the expedition, helping the cadets develop teamwork, resilience and practical outdoor skills.

Flight Lieutenant Nick Cook, Officer Commanding 1440 Squadron, expressed his appreciation for the funding:

"The funding was invaluable, as neither the squadron nor the cadets had the means to purchase this essential equipment themselves."

The benefits of the grant will extend well beyond this expedition, with the squadron planning further Duke of Edinburgh expeditions and continued use of the equipment.

The new radios will also support future training exercises, helping cadets develop vital communication skills.

Nick added:

"The Connaught Trust's support has made a lasting impact on our squadron and its cadets."
